These baskets are made from river grass, known as "elephant grass" by local weavers in Bolgatanga, Ghana. Baskets with leather handles are wrapped in goat skin for comfort and durability. The leather is naturally tanned using local seeds.

With every basket you purchase, you are helping provide employment, educational opportunities and medical care to artisans in Ghana.

Useful and Beautiful

This isn't the exact market basket I purchased, but close enough. It is deep enough to store throws or bedding for a guest bedroom, children's toys in a playroom, or books and magazines in the family room. These baskets are so much nicer for storage than anonymous plastic bins. They are also useful as a farmer's market or grocery basket, but I think mine will be handy storage for linens and towels. William Morris says that you should have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. These baskets satisfy both criteria.
