During their days living in Rome, founders Andrea & Colin spent plenty of time studying what makes the 'perfect' espresso. Did you know? In Italy, the large 'BAR' sign might not mean what you think it means. While you can get enjoy a perfect afternoon Campari spritz or wine aperitivo at the Italian 'bar,' that iconic sign is actually calling you in for a coffee! Nothing more, nothing less. The best part of the Italian coffee experience is walking right up to the coffee 'bar', ordering your drink, and taking it all in while standing there. If you are used to sitting down with your coffee, that's fine...but it might cost you a little more. Yep, table service costs extra in Italy - usually about one euro more! 

Naturally Sweet, Balanced, Exquisite

Honey Bear Reserve, an ode to the artisanal ‘honey’ movement, was the first of its kind born in Nicaragua.  Exhibiting this artisanal fruit-curing, Honey Bear is truly a reserve coffee.  

‘Honeyed’ refers to the natural coffee drying process. To be clear, there is no honey added. Just below the skin, similar to the best wine grapes, lies a thick layer of fruit surrounding two coffee plant seeds aka ‘beans’. Instead spring water fermentation, the fruit-covered seeds are put in the sun for 7 days of drying. The coffee fruit melts in the sun like honey, curing the raw seeds and infusing a light natural sweetness.  When roasted, the sweetness is subtle and the body is big. We embrace its unique character by hand-stamping each bag in Nicaragua.

Away from the source, this coffee is hard to find in high-grade, pure form. Arabica Maragogype is the largest Arabica coffee plant in the world & produces the largest fruits. Hence its name. Twin Engine found a farm, finalist in the Cup of Excellence competition, growing this Arabica bean exclusively, which became its Elefante Reserve.

Did you know? Being able to drink the highest quality single Arabica coffee "variety" from a single mountain farm is a recent, unique concept. The opportunity can be paralleled to drinking a one varietal Reserve wine from one winemaker in one region of one country. Historically, coffee has been sold in large 'lots' to exporters and coffee farmers has little control over their coffees after that. We have been able to create access to coffees such as the Elefante by seeking old growth plants and providing premiums for selecting out single varieties. Part of the Maragogype mystique is that, while loved, farmers haven't been able to pamper this giant tree because it is persnickety and generally yields less than other Arabica varieties. Through consistent work, we get to change that and make it available to you.

This decaf has all the richness of our Organic Breakfast Blend, a full-bodied coffee with a sweet nutty and vanilla flavor. Equal Exchange coffee is decaffeinated using two processes: CR3 Natural Liquid Carbon Dioxide Decaffeination, which uses CO2 to draw caffeine from the beans, and Mountain Water Process, which uses a water process that keeps the flavor components intact. Both are natural forms of decaffeination that preserve the quality of the coffee beans, leaving flavors fully intact.
